1993 Crayola Rubbing Art Kit: A Sealed 90s Time Capsule of Creative Chaos

Some vintage Crayola items are carefully documented. Some are tested. And some start as historical documentation before wandering directly into creative chaos.

This 1993 Crayola Rubbing Art Kit somehow managed to be all three. 🖍️

The kit had been sealed since 1993, which meant I was opening it 33 years later to see what was still waiting inside. And honestly? The moment I saw the bright box, blue rubbing plates, and that wonderfully nostalgic storage box, I knew this one was going to be fun.

A Very 90s Crayola Box

The front of the box promises 16 Crayola crayons and over 50 kooky characters, which is exactly the kind of phrase that makes a vintage activity kit feel instantly charming.

The colors are loud. The graphics are playful. There is a cartoon dinosaur on the front. There is even a Toys “R” Us price sticker still on the packaging.

Tiny historical artifact? Absolutely.

Tiny nostalgic dopamine machine? Also yes.

What Came Inside

Inside the kit were:

16 Crayola crayons

Blue rubbing plates: A make-a-face plate, Animal, dinosaur, outer space, and shape designs A storage box

The storage box immediately stood out to me because it has that classic cardboard pencil box feeling. It reminded me so much of the kind of school supply storage box I would have had as a kid.

That detail may not be the “main feature” of the kit, but it adds so much to the experience. Sometimes packaging is part of the nostalgia.

Actually, with vintage Crayola, packaging is almost always part of the nostalgia.

Wonderfully Simple

The concept of this kit is beautifully simple. You place one of the blue rubbing plates under a piece of paper, then rub the side of a crayon across the top. As the crayon moves over the raised design, the image appears on the paper. That is it. No batteries. No app. No complicated setup.

Just paper, texture, crayons, and a little bit of trial and error.

There is something really lovely about that.

The Crayons Still Had Life

One of the best surprises was the crayons. After 33 years sealed in the box, they were still incredibly satisfying to use. There is always a little suspense when opening vintage art supplies because you never quite know how the materials have aged. But these crayons still felt very usable.

They made the rubbing process feel playful and familiar, especially once I started layering colors and experimenting with different designs.

From Documentation to Creative Chaos

I started out trying to neatly document the kit. You know, normal Crayolona behavior.

Show the box. Show the contents. Test the pieces. Preserve the experience.

But once the rubbing plates came out, things got a little chaotic. The designs started layering together, the colors built up, and before long, my careful historical documentation had become a busy little page of animals, outer space shapes, faces, and whatever else happened to fit.

I kind of love it.

That may actually be the most authentic way to test a kit like this. It was designed for play, not perfection.

Why This Kit Is Worth Remembering

The 1993 Crayola Rubbing Art Kit is not just a box of crayons and plastic plates.

It is a snapshot of a very specific kind of childhood creativity: hands-on, low-tech, colorful, and a little messy.

It also connects nicely to earlier Crayola rubbing products, while feeling very much like its own 1990s activity kit. The bright packaging, playful design language, storage box, and “kooky characters” all make it feel rooted in that era.

This is exactly why I love documenting vintage Crayola products. Even simple kits can tell us something about how creativity was packaged, marketed, and experienced at the time.

Final Thoughts

Opening this sealed 1993 Crayola Rubbing Art Kit was such a fun little time capsule

moment. The box was bright and nostalgic. The storage case brought back serious school-supply memories. The crayons still worked beautifully. The rubbing plates were simple, playful, and surprisingly satisfying.

Was the final artwork neat and polished? Absolutely not.

Was it colorful, chaotic, and completely charming? Yes.

And for a 33-year-old Crayola activity kit, that feels like a win.
