Crayola Animated Glow Board: One of Crayola's Most Unique New Releases?

Every so often, Crayola releases a product that makes me stop and say, "Okay, I need to see how this works."

The Animated Glow Board was one of those products.

At first glance, it looks a little like a miniature television set from another era. But instead of displaying cartoons, the idea is that you create your own. Using special glow-reveal markers and layered drawing panels, the Animated Glow Board lights up artwork in sequence to create simple animated effects.

Naturally, I had to give it a try.

One of the things I enjoy most about reviewing modern Crayola products is seeing how the company continues to experiment with new ways to encourage creativity. While crayons, markers, and coloring books remain the heart of the brand, products like the Animated Glow Board show that Crayola is still willing to explore new ideas.

The board includes six Glow Reveal markers, two reusable drawing panels, and tracing templates to help users get started. Crayola also provides additional printable templates online, giving artists a few more options to experiment with.

The animation effect itself is the star of the show. Watching a drawing come to life through alternating illuminated panels is surprisingly satisfying and unlike anything else currently in Crayola's lineup.

That said, there are a few things prospective buyers should know.

Because the marker ink is only revealed when illuminated, it can be difficult to see exactly what you're drawing while you're creating your artwork. The reusable screens also attract dust rather easily, and you'll want to be careful to avoid scratches. The board requires three AA batteries and a small Phillips screwdriver to access the battery compartment.

Despite those minor frustrations, I found myself genuinely impressed by the final result. The board can be used for animation, layered artwork, tracing projects, and even as a reusable light-up message board. I was particularly interested in the option to illuminate both panels simultaneously, creating a layered effect that gives some drawings an almost three-dimensional appearance.

As a Crayola collector, I appreciate products that bring something different to the table, and the Animated Glow Board certainly does that. It's creative, a little quirky, and the kind of product that feels memorable.

Would I have wanted one of these as a kid? Absolutely.
