Sometimes Crayola creates products that make you stop and say, "Wait... it does what?"
The Crayola Pops Inflatable Characters set is definitely one of those products.
At first glance, it looks like a fairly typical activity kit. Inside the package you'll find four inflatable unicorns, five Pip-Squeaks washable markers, and a sticker sheet. Color your character, decorate it however you'd like, and then comes the part that makes this kit stand out.
You smack it. Seriously.
After giving the center a good smack and a quick shake, your flat unicorn begins to puff up into a three-dimensional inflatable character. It's a simple concept, but it's surprisingly satisfying to watch.
More Than Just Coloring
One thing I've always appreciated about Crayola is their willingness to experiment with new creative ideas. This isn't just another coloring book or craft project. It combines coloring, decorating, and a little bit of science into a single activity. Watching something you just colored suddenly transform into a puffy toy gives the project an extra sense of accomplishment.
Sometimes the most memorable Crayola products aren't the biggest sellers—they're the ones that try something completely different.
Curiosity Got the Better of Me...
Of course, I had to find out how it actually worked.
After sacrificing one of the inflatable characters in the name of science, I discovered there's a small liquid packet hidden inside that activates the inflation process.
If you're ever tempted to perform your own investigation, I'd definitely recommend doing it over a sink or protected surface. That little packet can make a surprising mess once it's opened!
One Small Limitation
The only real drawback I found was the color selection.
The kit includes five Pip-Squeaks markers, which are enough to complete the project, but I found myself wishing for a few more colors while decorating the unicorns. A slightly larger assortment would have allowed for even more creative designs.
Fortunately, if you already have extra Crayola markers at home, it's an easy limitation to overcome.
Final Thoughts
Crayola Pops is exactly the kind of product I enjoy reviewing because it's something many people have probably never seen before. It's creative, a little quirky, and delivers a genuinely fun surprise when your artwork suddenly pops into a three-dimensional character.
