The Second Chance Box

Every collector eventually ends up with a few misfits.

A crayon loses its box. Another loses its label. One breaks in half. A handful are rescued from the bottom of a thrift store bin or tucked away inside a worn package that has seen better days.

For many people, those crayons would simply be thrown away.

Around here, they get a second chance.

Recently, I picked up a bag of loose crayons and a well-loved Crayola box from a second-hand shop. While the box itself still has value as a collectible and historical artifact, the crayons inside had become separated from their original home. They were still perfectly usable, but they no longer belonged in a collection display.

That got me thinking about a problem every collector eventually faces.

What do you do with the crayons that don't quite fit anywhere?

The answer is something I call The Second Chance Box.

The concept is simple. Any loose crayons, broken crayons, label-less crayons, or crayons that have become separated from their original packaging can find a home here. Instead of being discarded, they become the crayons I use for creative projects, coloring sessions, melting experiments, and future craft ideas.

As a collector, I try to preserve original boxes, sets, and packaging whenever possible. If I own a complete vintage set, I'd rather not remove crayons from it for a craft project. The Second Chance Box gives me a way to continue creating while still respecting the history of the items in my collection.

In many ways, it represents the intersection of two parts of the Crayolona journey.

One side is collecting and preserving history.

The other is making things, experimenting, and enjoying the creative spirit that crayons were designed for in the first place.

The crayons in this box may be worn. Some may be missing labels. A few have certainly seen better days. But they still have stories left to tell.

And they still have colors left to share.
